background

The gap in clear messaging among parents, children, and teachers.

Even though children and parents talk about their school day (what happened and what they need to do before the next day), there is a gap in communication, more often than not. Feebe is a PWA (Progressive Web App) designed to open channels of communication between parents and teachers remotely.

I designed desktop and mobile screens along with a general user facing website for the purpose of advertising and putting up information about the app.

problem statement

How can parents gain a comprehensive understanding of their children’s school progress and stay informed about their out-of-school responsibilities?

Parents frequently receive calls from school when their child fails to communicate important events or assignments. Therefore, they need effective methods to stay informed, even when their children are reluctant to share information.

user research

Users have a hard time communicating with each other and keeping up with tasks

Research uncovered a common issue where parents would discover days later that their children had assignments due but had failed to inform them. This lack of direct communication between parents and teachers allowed children to either evade responsibilities or simply forget about them.

In response to this challenge, the app was enhanced with features designed to maintain a positive atmosphere and inject the elements of enjoyment and rewards into the children's tasks. Furthermore, certain in-person activities, such as taking attendance in class, were digitised to streamline teacher updates and tracking.

Key Insights

Communication is the main barrier. Parents and teachers need a better way of communicating with each other directly or indirectly (by way of tracking progress every day, week or month.

Simplified communication

Parents and teachers find that having a chat feature makes things easier, especially in the case of very young school-goers

Easy progress tracking

Teachers are able update academic progress through the app, and parents find that it’s convenient for them to have in one place

user persona

Target users are parents and teachers that need to have communication with children’s progress at school

visual design

Brand & visual guidelines

The client wanted to set the tone for their branding based on what the app looked like. Although I advised them otherwise, they wanted to stick to that.

Colour palette

A light theme was chosen as the client wanted the interface to be friendly and playful.

final designs

An app that allows for seamless communication between parents and teachers

chat

Chat functionality for parents and teachers to have a direct line of communication

milestones

Teachers are able to input milestone updates for parents to view

attendance

Teachers are able to take attendance digitally and submit the information to be visualised overall

timeline

Teachers are able to update the timeline with the quick action menu for parents to see everyday

usability testing

Testing resulted good task completion rates with positive responses when it came to user experience

Parents were able to communicate with teachers and vice versa, and teachers were able to provide necessary updates on children’s progress.

learnings

Reflection

Designing for innovative modes of communication

It was tricky to keep appearances friendly while handling approachable messaging. Since the app targeted parents, simplicity in task flows was effected to achieve seamless user experience while finding creative ways to implement features that maintained fun and approachability. There's a lot I still have to learn about using the right language to be inclusive of everyone's identity.

Designing for inclusivity of accessible features

I learned a lot about designing with the use of 3D illustrations. Using appropriate colour palettes, fonts and 3D illustration & icon libraries was the main challenge, after which the style was used throughout the app.
